My Internship with Imagine Events

The Internship Feedback Extended Abstract (IFEA)

My M1 internship with Imagine Events

(9 weeks validated for the International Mobility)

Abstract

The goal of my 9-week internship with Imagine Events during this summer was to find ideas to improve their website [1].

Imagine Events is an event organizer based in Canada which sets conventions up, where people can meet their favorite actors. Because of the pandemic, they started doing virtual events gathering fans from all around the world. Of course, entering on such a new market means having to please more and more people whom wishes are very different.

This is why I had to reach as much convention attenders as possible in order to have a great range of opinions about what they want to see on such websites. Then I had to find ways to include their best ideas on Imagine Events website, which was already a very interesting and complete website. The first step was in fact to discover, understand and remember everything that was already on there and how things were organized (tab/window/page and so on).

I.     Introduction

I choose to throw a large survey on my Twitter account, where people could read the questions in French or in English in order to reach as many people as possible, what has also been possible thanks to the official retweet of Imagine Events. It was a google

form [2] divided in two parts: they had to tell what was missing on convention

organizers websites according to them, and then some already-thought ideas were presented to see if that could interest them. 34 people answered to this survey.

II.     The work I did

After throwing this survey, the most important part of the work was still to be done.

The ultimate goal was to take in consideration every opinion, but then ranking the most relevant ideas. I went through all the propositions that I received in order to choose the one I wanted to talk about to Imagine Events, with ideas for the implementation.

I advised Imagine Events to have more information about their upcoming events, such as a tab with housings close to the place of the event, the transportation stations or even an itinerary from downtown. The amount of money spend in their events for one user could be displayed if their ticketing owns a history; and from this, a loyalty account to offer discounts to the best customers. Some place on the website for fans to discuss would be really appreciated, either by the means of a discussion group, or through private messagings for people owning an account. Last but not least, almost all users want to be warned when something they were planning to buy is about to go out of stock: this could be managed through a newsletter or through notifications depending on the amount of extras remaining on the ticketing and send to people who added this notification.

Something else that I did was to get in touch with people suffering from disabilities, to understand what could give websites a better accessibility; this ended with me sending propositions to Imagine Events about possible and easy adaptations for the website, as well as actions they could take while organizing their events.

III.     Feedback analysis

Something I did well was not spending too much time on interesting but unfeasible or low-interest features. For instance, everything related to the ticketings was not so useful in my work because Imagine Events, contrary to other organisms, already had its own programmed ticketing directly on the website.

Another thing which was really well done through this survey is reaching people from different milieus, in particular geographical ones. I did propose my own features but without imposing them first on respondents and then on the company, so that people could make their own opinions.

This being said, they are many other things that could have be done better.

Managing to reach an even bigger panel of people would have been very useful and would have allow me to propose more ideas to please everyone.

I didn’t give a lot of solutions related to in-person event, however with the path toward the end of the pandemic, they should be back soon.

And in a more general way, I should have spent more time getting in touch with the company team, just to be sure I had left no information aside, and to confirm I was going in the right direction. It would have made my work easier and smoother. However, at the end, it didn’t impact my results too much.

And I can’t help but feel very proud that my internship in this company enabled them to become more inclusive; for disabled people, transgenders, non-binary people and in particular for hard of hearing and deaf people. For their upcoming events, a traductor will be there to sign.

IV.     Conclusion

This internship allowed me to improve my communication skills and gave me the opportunity to discover a new place where I had to learn and understand what people wanted and needed before trying to find solutions to help them. It was a really interesting experience and it brought me many useful and deep-thinking things from the human perspective. In regard to their feedbacks, this benefit was mutual.
